Director of Human Resources Michael Taylor said filling this position is a crucial next step in furthering the city’s work around DEI. On Oct. 13, Mayor Linda Tyer signed the DEI ordinance officially establishing the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as a department in the City of Pittsfield.

The creation of the office was one of several recommendations and findings produced by a study group commissioned by Mayor Tyer in the fall of 2020. The study group was tasked with providing recommendations on enhancing DEI in the following areas: recruitment and retention; leadership and career development; cultural competency training; strategic planning; compliance; advocacy; and education.

“Now that we have established the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the City of Pittsfield, the position of Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) will be vital to ensuring this office is successful in advancing DEI in our local government and schools. DEI is a critical component to an organization’s success – and it is full-time work. We simply cannot tack the responsibilities on to an already existing job description,” Taylor said.

“Employing a Chief Diversity Officer will only strengthen our ability to continue delivering quality services and creating an inclusive and safe community where all people are empowered to live, work, and play, a city where individuals are respected and valued for their unique contributions,” he said.
