For the fourth consecutive year, the City of Pittsfield has been selected for the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the compilation of its FY21 annual budget from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
The award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting, according to a news release from the association. In order to receive the budget award, the city had to meet and be rated proficient in nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These categories are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.
Finance Director Matthew Kerwood said this year’s award was especially poignant considering the unprecedented circumstances of 2020.
“Given the challenges in putting together the fiscal year 2021 budget due to the pandemic, I am pleased that GFOA has again recognized our budget as a document of excellence,” Kerwood said. “As we begin the fiscal year 2022 budget process we will work to build off the GFOA’s recommendations for further improvement in our budget book as an important policy document for the city.”
The City of Pittsfield was first selected for the award in 2017.
There are more than 1,600 participants in the association’s Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on the association’s website, www.gfoa.org.
The Government Finance Officers Association is a major professional association servicing the needs of more than 19,000 appointed and elected local, state, and provincial-level government officials and other finance practitioners.
