Standing in front of Fire Headquarters on Columbus Avenue, Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski and Father Peter Gregory, alongside a semi-circle of firefighters gathered for the blessing of the department’s newest truck, a 2019 Seagrave Rescue Pumper.
The custom-built truck, which arrived to headquarters last week, features various compartments to accommodate equipment. Chief Czerwinski said the blessing ceremony is a longstanding department tradition. “It’s an important part of who we are and what we do.”
Father Gregory, who delivered the blessing, also thanked the firefighters for their service. “You are the instruments of protection.”
The ceremony ended with a symbolic “pushing in” of the truck back into the garage, a ritual which was first initiated back in the 1800s, Czerwinski said.
