Council on Aging (COA)

Hello Seniors,
Since our last update, The Ralph J Froio Senior Center has fully reopened. We are so happy to see our Seniors here again, enjoying the classes, the game room, eating in our congregate meal site and enjoying lunch, all while socializing with many of those friends they haven’t seen in well over a year.  Many are having breakfast in our new “Box Office Café”, playing bingo and checking out our new slate of programs.
Some of our new programing that we have started this year is in the area of Health & Wellness.  New programing includes: Chair Yoga, Meditation, Golden Walkers Club, and Therapeutic Touch sessions.  In the information and education arena, we have started our Afternoon Tea event, where we present a different guest speaker each month in our newly re-imaged Box Office Café.  Topics of discussions range from the benefits of CBD oil/creams, learning the techniques of therapeutic touch, preplanning of final arrangements, and coping with grief.

We will be bringing back our ‘Froio After Hours’ sessions in the upcoming months. These evening programs are designed to allow Seniors, who may otherwise not be able to attend sessions during the day, to partake in informational and educational events here at the center.

We are currently working with the travel agencies to resume our Travelling Seniors trips.  Unfortunately, like in most areas of the country, destinations for our most popular trips are having difficulty obtaining staffing for their venues or attractions. Please call the center to find out more information about the trips as they become available.

Farmers Market coupons are here once again, and our distribution time is Monday – Friday from Noon to 3 PM. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides low-income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for eligible foods (fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs) at our local farmers' markets through the month of October.

The interest for volunteering has been overwhelming, we are so happy to see so many of our community members wanting to get involved and lend a helping hand, as we all traverse this “new normal” together.  Opportunities for volunteering are always available. We are always looking for new programs and ideas, please let us know what you would like to see here at your Senior Center.

Our Supportive Day Program, “The Happy Club”, received a generous donation from The Crane Fund for Widows and Children through The Crane Corporation.  This donation will be used to help provide scholarships to those clients who may otherwise not be able to attend this very important program as often as their caregivers would like.  Many Thanks to Crane and Company.

Our monthly Brown Bag program has collaborated with Door Dash, an online food ordering and food delivery service, that assists us with the delivery of our food pantry items. We are so happy to be able to partner with them.  This partnership allows us to continue to offer this important program, while minimizing the disruption of transporting our seniors on those days.

Thank You to all for making our reopening a great success.  Your understanding and compliance with the mandates and local requirements has been remarkable.   We appreciate your willingness to return to the center and socialize with your friends and fellow seniors.  For those who have yet to return and those who have never been, we are here to welcome you to, one of the hidden Gems of Pittsfield, The Ralph J Froio Senior Center.

Activities are Re-Opening

As many of you know, we are slowly reopening, to get our Seniors back together.  Below are most of the current offerings and more are opening each week.

Be aware that we are still following CDC, State, and local Boards of Health guidance.  This is very important to insure a safe and healthy reopening.  Masks, sanitization, and social distancing are still a priority.

Members must have a "reservation" to attend an activity....walk-ins are not allowed.  To make a reservation, contact your activity's group leader or call the main office.   As with all activities, you are only allowed in the building for your small group activity.  Once your session is over, you are required to leave the building.

All attendees must sign in upon arrival to aid in contact tracing, should the need arise.

Vaccinations are not required, but highly encouraged.

The Pittsfield Council on Aging is an agency dedicated to the interests and needs of seniors 55 years and older.  Through many programs and services offered at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center and other facilities, the Council actively seeks to enrich and maintain quality of life of each senior in our community.

The purpose of the Pittsfield Council on Aging is to:

  • Identify the needs of elders.
  • Design, promote, and implement services that fulfill elder needs.
  • Inform and educate our community on pertinent senior issues and enlist support of area organizations to address elder needs.

In pursuing our mission, we collaborate with other local Councils on Aging and Senior Centers, Adult Day Health Program, Elder Services of Berkshire County, Inc., housing programs and many other elder related agencies.

A 21 member Board of Directors governs the Council on Aging agency.  Appointments are made by the Council on Aging nominating board and then referred to the Mayor and City Council for final approval.  The Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM.  Meetings are held at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, 330 North Street and are open to the public.

Ralph J. Froio Senior Center

In 1993, the Council on Aging moved from Bradford Street to 330 North Street upon completion of the reconstruction and renovation of the former Capitol Theater.  The City of Pittsfield renamed and dedicated the building “The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center “ in honor of this long time civic leader who spent countless hours in volunteer service to his community, especially in senior citizens’ affairs.  Through his many years of service, Ralph J. Froio served as Chairman of the Council on Aging as well as for countless other charitable organizations and causes.

The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center is a handicapped accessible facility in that is within walking distance of several housing projects and is available by bus.  The facility is 15,000 square feet in total area and consists of four floors.  In the basement, there is a woodworking shop, ceramics shop and a board room.  Just beyond the lobby on the first floor, you will find a coffee shop and lounge area, a computer lab and our administrative offices.  The Supportive Day Program and the main meeting room are located on the second floor along with the kitchen.  The third floor accommodates a craft room, a game room, two classrooms and the Group Office.

Hours of Operation

The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Our administrative offices open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM daily.  The Center is closed on Saturdays.
