Council on Aging (COA)

The Pittsfield Council on Aging is an agency dedicated to the interests and needs of seniors 55 years and older.  Through many programs and services offered at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center and other facilities, the Council actively seeks to enrich and maintain quality of life of each senior in our community.

The purpose of the Pittsfield Council on Aging is to:

  • Identify the needs of elders.
  • Design, promote, and implement services that fulfill elder needs.
  • Inform and educate our community on pertinent senior issues and enlist support of area organizations to address elder needs.

In pursuing our mission, we collaborate with other local Councils on Aging and Senior Centers, Adult Day Health Program, Elder Services of Berkshire County, Inc., housing programs and many other elder related agencies.

A 21 member Board of Directors governs the Council on Aging agency.  Appointments are made by the Council on Aging nominating board and then referred to the Mayor and City Council for final approval.  The Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM.  Meetings are held at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, 330 North Street and are open to the public.

Ralph J. Froio Senior Center

In 1993, the Council on Aging moved from Bradford Street to 330 North Street upon completion of the reconstruction and renovation of the former Capitol Theater.  The City of Pittsfield renamed and dedicated the building “The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center “ in honor of this long time civic leader who spent countless hours in volunteer service to his community, especially in senior citizens’ affairs.  Through his many years of service, Ralph J. Froio served as Chairman of the Council on Aging as well as for countless other charitable organizations and causes.

The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center is a handicapped accessible facility in that is within walking distance of several housing projects and is available by bus.  The facility is 15,000 square feet in total area and consists of four floors.  In the basement, there is a woodworking shop, ceramics shop and a board room.  Just beyond the lobby on the first floor, you will find a coffee shop and lounge area, a computer lab and our administrative offices.  The Supportive Day Program and the main meeting room are located on the second floor along with the kitchen.  The third floor accommodates a craft room, a game room, two classrooms and the Group Office.
